KMU’s Agricultural Value Addition Initiative

KMU is proud to operate a robust value addition facility as part of its strategic initiative to control and enhance the agricultural value chain. This approach not only supports student learning through hands-on experience but also contributes to the university’s income generation efforts.

KMU manages a 500-hectare crop farm in Senga Hill District and an additional 20 hectares on campus, where a variety of crops are cultivated. These farms serve dual purposes: facilitating student practicals and producing agricultural inputs for value addition.

To support its value chain control strategy, KMU has invested in essential agro-processing machinery, including:

  • A hammer mill for processing maize into mealie meal and meal samp.
  • A cooking oil press for producing cooking oil from sunflower and soya beans.
  • A roaster and mixer used in the production of fish feed, utilizing ingredients such as sunflower cake, soya beans, and maize bran.

The finished products are sold to students and staff at affordable rates, ensuring accessibility while fostering a self-sustaining model.

Looking ahead, KMU plans to further expand its crop production and value addition capacity. This expansion is aimed at increasing income generation and supplement government funding, positioning KMU as a model for agricultural innovation and sustainability in higher education.
